What is this exhibit?:
Meet Hayley and the Mars Rover in this video
If you were born after 1997 there have been robots exploring Mars for your entire life, and our exhibit shows you a model of one of these robots! It has solar panels, receivers and 6 wheels, just like the real rovers. Our rover is controlled from a screen in another part of Space Zone. This means you can’t see the rover when you are controlling it, just like the robot drivers cannot see the rover on Mars. One job of the robots is to find out what the conditions on Mars are like, so that maybe one day humans can visit!
-
Why is this exhibit important?:
This exhibit is important because it gets us thinking about space exploration. Sending robots to Mars is one of the ways we know so much about the red planet, but we still have lots of unanswered questions, so we need to keep exploring!

Who’s representing this exhibit in I’m a Scientist?:
Hello! I’m Hayley and I am a Science Explainer at the Life Science Centre in Newcastle. I grew up in a small town just outside the Lake District and then moved to the North East for university, where I studied Geology and Environmental Science. When I am not at work I enjoy horse riding, reading, playing board games and astronomy.
I love space science so my favourite parts of my job are taking the inflatable planetarium to schools in the North East, or running shows in the North’s biggest planetarium in Space Zone.

What’s an interesting fact about this exhibit?
Models are built to test everything before sending the real rover on its mission. There is a warehouse just outside London called the Mars Yard which has been made to look like Mars where these models are tested.
Who looks after it?
Hayley and the explainer team answer visitors questions about this exhibit. Our team of technicians installed it and make sure it continues to explore our pretend Martian landscape.
Why should you vote for this exhibit?
Mars is a fascinating planet that maybe you will be one of the first humans to visit!
