  As of 2020 there have been 15 astronaut and 4 cosmonaut (what the Russians call their astronauts) deaths during space flight. There have also been some other deaths during training. These brave people know how risky and dangerous space travel can be, and they choose to do it anyway in the hope that we will be able to learn more.
